Project Name: Astana Light Railway Temporary Camp
Location: Astana, Kazakhstan (Airport to New Railway Station)
Client: Astana New Transportation System Authority
Contract Value: Confidential
Completion Period: Completed within client-specified schedule
Scope: Provision of insulated barracks, offices, and support facilities for 3,000 personnel
The first phase of Astana’s new light rail system covers the segment from the airport to the city’s new railway station. At peak construction, the project required accommodation and office space for up to 3,000 workers. Astana’s winter climate presents extreme challenges, with a lengthy snow cover of 130–140 days and record lows reaching −52 °C.
Establish a secure, fully insulated camp capable of withstanding heavy snow loads and extreme cold.
Provide turnkey facility delivery within an aggressive timeline to support uninterrupted rail construction.
Ensure all structures meet local approval standards and client specifications for durability and thermal performance.
ZA-Type Modular Units:
Total camp area: 18,041 m², comprising 60 individual barrack buildings.
Wall and roof panels: 150 mm thick rock wool sandwich panels for superior insulation.
Windows: Triple-glazed hollow glass casement units to minimize heat loss and noise.
Cold-Climate Engineering:
Structural design calculations validated for snow pressure loads.
Enhanced sealing and thermal breaks incorporated at all joints and connections.
Rapid Deployment & Quality Control:
Off-site prefabrication enabled precise factory QA/QC.
Chengdong dispatched four senior installation instructors to oversee on-site assembly under harsh winter conditions.
Streamlined logistics and synchronized approvals ensured timely camp commissioning.
Operational Resilience: Camp structures maintained interior comfort despite subzero temperatures and heavy snow accumulation.
On-Time Delivery: Full camp completed per schedule, enabling rail works to proceed without site accommodation delays.
Client Satisfaction: Astana New Transportation System Authority praised the camp’s robustness, thermal efficiency, and the professionalism of Chengdong’s installation team.
Chengdong Modular House’s expertise in extreme-weather prefabrication delivered a reliable, high-performance camp solution for the Astana Light Railway project, reinforcing its reputation as a trusted partner for large-scale infrastructure developments in challenging environments.
